Right; hybrid graphics switching is not supported in Ubuntu at this time. There are various experimental solutions out on the interwebs you could try, but we only support booting with the base graphics (sandy bridge).
One work around you could try is blacklisting the i915 module from being loaded. Theoretically that should permit nouveau to pick up the graphics and go. Again though, this is not a supported configuration. ** Description changed: Ubuntu 12.04 live (daily 23.12.) fails to boot when nvidia/nouveau is the primary gfx @ bios. Using Sandy Bridge gfx it at least boots, but does not use the nouveau stuff for much then. Most likely assigned to wrong package, but attached information might be interesting for developers regardless. + + [ 37.808] + Backtrace: + [ 37.808] 0: X (xorg_backtrace+0x26) [0x460566] + [ 37.808] 1: X (0x400000+0x64b6a) [0x464b6a] + [ 37.808] 2: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0x7f2b970e1000+0x10060) [0x7f2b970f1060] + [ 37.808] 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.so (0x7f2b91e6d000+0x6ee9) [0x7f2b91e73ee9] + [ 37.808] 4: X (WakeupHandler+0x5b) [0x433a6b] + [ 37.808] 5: X (WaitForSomething+0x1b6) [0x45e016] + [ 37.808] 6: X (0x400000+0x2f912) [0x42f912] + [ 37.808] 7: X (0x400000+0x232fe) [0x4232fe] + [ 37.808] 8: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xed) [0x7f2b9600a30d] + [ 37.808] 9: X (0x400000+0x235ed) [0x4235ed] + [ 37.808] Segmentation fault at address (nil) + [ 37.808] + Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault).
