I'm still having issues even after trying what Alex suggested. My computer is a T60 Thinkpad. I only started experiencing problems since 11.10.
If I make the above changes, pulseaudio only shows analog stereo, instead of the normal analog stereo, analog stereo duplex, digital etc... Sound is ok, with faint crackling, if move the mouse, open a window or do anything cpu intensive it will start to crackle badly. I started with 10.10 and upgraded to 11.04 and then to 11.10 . 11.04 didnt have any issues, and 11.10 does for some reason. Also digital never worked even on 11.04. Please let me know what logs you need.
