I have the same problem on 11.10 (old version had it too), if I scp/nfs a large file it starts, go fast but at some point the network of the machine does not work anymore. sometimes it transfers 1GB others a 100MB. I use the bridge interface to get to the machine and it still responding, it seems like the attached virtual network card is what is failing.. I remember using tun/tap with VirtualBox, is it possible to try using that with the bridge?
