I have also run into this bug. It's very annoying.

If you set the mark "Do this autmatically for files like this from now
on." firefox actually says right there that "Settings can be changed in
the Downloas section of Edit, Preferences". Only that you can't. The
dialog that opens there is always empty. (This is the bug)
That would be bad enough. But now imagine (this has actually happened to
me) that a user installs realplayer and instructs firefox to always open
certain videos with firefox.

Sometime later the user finds out that totem is much better and dumps
realplayer. But sadly now the videos don't play at all anymore! Firefox
doesn't find realplayer and complains. And there's no way to change the
association in the options.

So the user is now stuck with a severely broken browser.

The fix mentioned above works but I don't think we can expect normal
users to do something like that.
