Public bug reported: Sound doesn't work in Mac Mini 2011 (macmini 5,2) with Ubuntu 11.10 (x86_64). So far I've only managed to get sound output from the internal speaker by adding
options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsabase.conf. This way I can get output from the left speaker using Gnome's (Pulseaudio's?) speaker test. I've also tried using 'imac27' and 'auto' as values for model which produces no sound output. I've also checked alsamixer, but the outputs were not muted.
