For a workaround see:

"Right click the K menu, then Edit Applications. Find Thunderbird, then
click in the Advanced tab. make your shortcut, then click in the save
icon. Now see if it works."

I'm new in KDE and Kubuntu and maybe this is the right way to proceed,
but I'm not sure; I thought 'Mail' in 'Standard shortcuts' would open
mail client.
