Another observation: when on Analog Headphones port extremely soft sound can be heard through headphones. Using Ubuntu's default sound configuration, setting the volume to the maximum (over 100%), the only alert sound I can even notice from the Sound Effects tab is the Glass sound, the others are too faint.
** Tags added: apport-collected running-unity ** Description changed: Output from: `lsb_release -rd` Description: Ubuntu 11.10 Release: 11.10 Output from: `apt-cache policy alsa-base` alsa-base: Installed: 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Expected: 1) Plug-in headphones 2) Output switches automatically to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' port 'Analog Headphones' 3) Speakers are muted 4) Sound resumes on headphones What happens: 1) Plug-in headphones 2) Output switches automatically to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' port 'Analog Headphones' 3) Speakers are muted 4) Headphones are muted as well! Further notes: * When switching back to the 'Analog Speakers' port sound works on the headphones and speakers are muted. * I have a second headphone socket which is marked as an S/PDIF output and works on the PCM channel at `alsamixer` * Setting Auto-Mute Mode in `alsamixer` to 'Disabled' prevents the automatic switching (step 2) and lets sound play on both the speakers and headphones. * When setting Auto-Mute Mode in `alsamixer` to 'Disabled' to have both speakers and headphones output audio, the 'Headphone' and 'Speaker' channels control both speaker and headphone volume and assumes the volume level of whichever channel was changed last. + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. + ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4 + Architecture: amd64 + ArecordDevices: + **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** + card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC665 Analog [ALC665 Analog] + Subdevices: 0/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: beanow 1848 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: beanow 1848 F...m pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: beanow 1848 F...m pulseaudio + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'PCH'/'HDA Intel PCH at 0xf1c00000 irq 50' + Mixer name : 'Intel CougarPoint HDMI' + Components : 'HDA:10ec0665,102804b6,00100003 HDA:80862805,80860101,00100000' + Controls : 27 + Simple ctrls : 13 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 + EcryptfsInUse: Yes + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) + NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia + Package: alsa-driver (not installed) + ProcEnviron: + PATH=(custom, no user) + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-14.23-generic 3.0.9 + Tags: oneiric running-unity + Uname: Linux 3.0.0-14-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 10/20/2011 + dmi.bios.vendor: Dell Inc. + dmi.bios.version: A07 + dmi.board.name: 0YR8NN + dmi.board.vendor: Dell Inc. + dmi.board.version: A00 + dmi.chassis.type: 8 + dmi.chassis.vendor: Dell Inc. + dmi.chassis.version: 0.1 + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnDellInc.:bvrA07:bd10/20/2011:svnDellInc.:pnDellSystemXPSL502X:pvr:rvnDellInc.:rn0YR8NN:rvrA00:cvnDellInc.:ct8:cvr0.1: + dmi.product.name: Dell System XPS L502X + dmi.sys.vendor: Dell Inc. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/913451 Title: Headphone output on wrong port Dell XPS 15 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/913451/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
