Sorry Clint for not getting back to you. I had to completely remove Shotwell for a while as it was not being loaded at all. Therefore the request was moot, ie; I was not using any method to load it. I had already tried to modify the launcher to remove any %U from the command line with no effect. After i had removed it and reinstalled it i had the problem only when launched (from Unity, command line or Lens) and decided to simply leave it alone for a bit. Eventually it annoyed me so much i did a fresh install of 11.10 and the problem no longer occurs.
