I had the same problem on oneiric. The solution, which worked for me, after looking at other similar (segfault) bugs was to reinstall gnome-orca (I had removed it not so long ago). I also switched the universal access screen reader and typing assistant on and off. Synaptic then started as it should and functioned correctly again. I then removed gnome-orca again and synaptic still functions.
