I use Gnome Shell as default but still getting this error after starting up. LightDM simply not showing and the screen was in a loop of showing the cursor and black out. Switching to console by keyboard (Ctrl + Fn) only works when the cycle died down with a black screen. Kill the underlying X server and startx would start Gnome Shell with this error.
