As mentioned, once I do "ifconfig eth0 down", the problems stop. Once I do "ifconfig eth0 up", they start again.
powertop reports between: 99.2 ms/s 0.0 kWork e1000_watchdog_task and 393.2 ms/s 0.1 kWork e1000_watchdog_task While the network interface is completely idle (well, it doesn't work)! The curious thing is that it used to work but it has broken recently in Ubuntu 11.10.
