The 386 kernel is an artifac from an Edgy dist-upgrade, because 386/k7 
kernel flavours were renamed to generic in Feisty in order to avoid 
confusion.  Can you confirm that your -386 kernel is version 2.6.17.

I will tweak my apt source file to install an older kernel from the Edgy 
distribution, and will post my comments after.
