Yes that workaround also worked on SuSe 11.4. This is not a problem just
with Ubuntu, having tried a few current distro's in an attempt to find
one which works I can say that they all have the same issue in varying
degrees, at least that's my experience. Interestingly I have also come
across a few references to similar problems in XP. My gut feel is that
it's an ACPI / interrupt mapping problem  but really don't know enough
to prove / investigate it.
