This is quite surprising to me, but I switched to Chromium from Chrome and I haven't seen a hardlock since my last post. This comment on Google's help section confirms this as a possibility: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=7493a9fc196ea8be&hl=en
This thread also reports the problem for someone using a Thinkpad T61p: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1470623 That person claims the hardlocks also occur with Chromium, but I haven't experienced them yet. Please if someone with hardlocks using Chrome could switch to Chromium to see if this fixes the issue for you as well. Thanks!
