I also had 4 crashes to text only screen in the first week after upgrading to 11.10. My machine is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120, 1 Gig RAM. The machine was stable with 11.04. Downgrading the desktop to Unity 2D appears to have cured the problem. Also Firefox crashed to desktop several times per day when using Unity 3D but this is also cured by downgrading to Unity 2D.
