Checked alsamixer to see if that was weird at all. Master volume doesn't
go beyond 0 until after the halfway point. After that, the slider makes
the audio very loud with very little movement of the bar. Pressing the
volume keys on my keyboard makes a massive difference in the audio; one
click will bring it from too low to too loud.

It seems that the indicator is incorrect.
