@Anders: Thanks, and thanks for your helpful input! Disabling transparent menus did seem to help, in that I was able to work intently for about 2 hours w/o menus disappearing. This is a much longer period than I've experienced in recent times (menus typically disappear on me every several minutes; hence, my aggressiveness in trying to help "working the problem" :) ). I'm not sure this tells us much, but it seemed worth mentioning, and I promised to report back.
Sigh.
