I have installed Google Chrome and Opera for Linux, Firefox for windows
under Wine (flashplayer won't install), the beta version of flashplayer
11. But none of it has made the sound work in my browsers.

In Chrome, HTML 5 sound didn't work, but in Firefox it did.

I uninstalled and killed pulseaudio, and that made no difference. If I
could install an ALSA mixer without uninstalling a large chunk of the
system, I'd do it. I've always been happy with ALSA, and never really
understood why pulseaudio came around. Meanwhile, browser audio within
Firefox and Chrome works fine on Windows 7, to which I have to boot if I
want to watch a video online.
