One last thing to add to my original report. I also ran "sudo apt-get clean" after running the Janitor utility. But again, that was two or three days ago and it seemed like the system was fine until then. Then just today, update-manager showed this problem. So perhaps that is unrelated. But I am still suspicious that either janitor or apt-get clean caused a dependency problem or mishandled the merge file that the system reports is messed up.
