Following the suggestion/request of Joseph Salisbury above, I tested kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.2-rc1.
I am still a Linux newbie and found the instructions slightly confusing. I did not download the linux header file at first, but tried to install the kernel using sudo dpkg -i *.deb. Seeing error messages, I then did download the header file and ran the command again. The upshot is that 1) the computer does shut down properly 2) After booting up message box appears - Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors Only a few screen resolutions are available. 3 Old kernel versions seem to be affected also. I may not be able to boot them up and uninstall the new kernel -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889882 Title: problem with shutdown ubuntu 11.10 x64 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/889882/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
