Still occurs in ubuntu 11.10.

To reproduce, open a 5000 line text file in gedit, maximize, and then
try alternating between typing text and scrolling to distant parts of
the file.    Because you have to move the mouse precisely to the
tiny highlit area of the scrollbar, it's hard to cause the thumb to
become visible.  People who are used to just moving the mouse to
one end of the scrollbar and holding down the mouse to scroll are SOL.

I see the demo video of this feature at

never used a really tall document with a very small highlit thumb, so the 
problem wasn't evident there.
