I have the same crashes and tried the ubuntu mainline kernel 3.2rc2, but it doesn't start X. I used the .deb file to install it. I don't know whether that's the reasing for not booting, but it said it needs the apparmor compatibility patch, which I can't find. I looked on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/apparmor and http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/security/apparmor/ .
