I performed several fresh i386 desktop installs from 8.04 Hardy to 11.10 Oneiric. Suspend works until 9.04 Jaunty included. Beginning with 9.10 Karmic, resume is broken. (BTW, I discovered that unpluging the battery charger (new 100% charged battery) in Karmic sends the laptop to sleep and then hang - maybe another different bug)
