OK, The last line displayed in the verbose boot is "stopping system V runlevel compatability" I get a flicker, a mouse icon and then the mouse icon freezes on top of the cli screen. Usually I can hit alt-F2 to drop into the command line prompt.
I booted with the "debug=" startup parameter. It booted into the text interface.
