Public bug reported:

When I "Open Directory" from the "Media" menu, there is no sound until I
go to "Tools" "Preferences" "Audio" and click the "Save" button. I
don't even have to change the "Output Module", though it sometimes
doesn't work unless I do.

If I use "play" from the "sox" package from the command line, I can't
get any sound from vlc at all, unless I start vlc first.
