The text hinting option in Settings Manager was set to None. I can't
remember exactly what I changed it to, but something other than None,
obviously. Immediately, the bottom part of my autohidden panel turned to
black. Changing the hinting back to None had no effect, so the panel has
been looking incomplete ever since.

However, every time I unhide the panel, it shows up complete, without
any problems.

I'm not using compositing effects in the window manager, in case that
makes a difference.
