I tried the "open two instances" idea. It's a no-go unless you have
infinite patience for adjusting window size and positions, and don't
mind wasting the space for the fourth (second / extra) "places? column
or covering it with the left side screen, and bouncing around to keep it
covered. This almost falls under the category of "How to keep an idiot
busy", except it's not quite a real infinite loop, just many iterations
of "move this", "adjust that", "do the other...".

Pushing f3 is "only" one additional step, where there should be no extra
steps.

I think it's a real waste of time to not have the option to default to two
windows at startup. It's only a preference, and Nautilus will open as a single
window if it's not checked as a preference!
