More Background:

This occurred on upgrade from Natty.

Steps taken to fault find:

I imported a copy of my calendar file but still the calendar remained
empty.

On advice I made sure Settings>Sidebar>Show Calendar Manager was
checked, but Calendar Manager did not display!

I did a clean install of Oneiric (on a spare partition) and the Calendar
worked properly and I was able to observe Calendar Manager - and find
out how to turn calendars on and off.

I returned to my upgraded installation and was able to reveal Calendar
Manager by dragging the Sidebar open. I was then able to see Calendar
Manager and enable my calendar. PROBLEM SOLVED.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1) The Upgrade from Natty should be debugged so that it preserves the
currently selected calendars.

2) On importing a calendar the newly imported calendar should be
selected (by default), or the Calendar Manager should be forced to show
in the sidebar and sidebar forced to expand if collapsed.

3) When a show option such as Settings>Sidebar>Show Calendar Manager is
selected the sidebar should be expanded if in the collapsed state.
