More Background: This occurred on upgrade from Natty.
Steps taken to fault find: I imported a copy of my calendar file but still the calendar remained empty. On advice I made sure Settings>Sidebar>Show Calendar Manager was checked, but Calendar Manager did not display! I did a clean install of Oneiric (on a spare partition) and the Calendar worked properly and I was able to observe Calendar Manager - and find out how to turn calendars on and off. I returned to my upgraded installation and was able to reveal Calendar Manager by dragging the Sidebar open. I was then able to see Calendar Manager and enable my calendar. PROBLEM SOLVED.
