I have experienced similar issues but these have been quickly resolved.
Rebooting a couple of times immediately following install/upgrade has
settled most things down for me. Can you also check the Sound
Settings>Applications tab to see if the running sound application
(Banshee for example) is shown when running. Check the Hardware tab and
set to Analogue Stereo Duplex for now. On the Output tab make sure the
Connector is set to Analogue Output.
