gxine cannot do this by itself. It needs a buggy X graphics driver. (I'm
assuming that you mean that the laptop is completely unresponsive:
keyboard LEDs can't be toggled and you can't ping it or log in to it
from another computer.)

You can try different graphics drivers (-V opengl, -V xshm) and see what
happens. If it works, set the default and reassign this bug to whichever
graphics driver package you're using. (ATI taintware?)
