I think that I have found that this issue is related to using a 2nd
monitor.

Sequence 1 (I am not sure if this causes the display corruption), but
its related to sequence 2:

1. 2nd monitor is not detected when plugged into hdmi (its own issue)
2. I click the "gear" in the top right, then "Displays"
3. The monitors "flicker" but the 2nd one is detected. Unity almost always
crashes here (another issue)
4. Both displays work properly

Sequence 2 (I think this causes the corruption)

1. 2nd monitor is already working, either from sequence 1, or because I booted
with it connected.
2. I unplug the hdmi monitor.
3. I click the "gear" in the top right, then "Displays"
4. The monitors "flicker" and the hdmi monitor is de-registered
5. If I suspend the system here, when I resume I will almost certainly (maybe
100% certainly, just not convinced yet) have to fix the display corruption bug
reported here. The system will never resume without the corruption issue at
this point until I reboot.
