I've now had a chance to try this with Mandriva 2011.0 and Mageia 1.0. They are using the same generations of xorg and kernel that Ubuntu 11.10 uses, i.e. xorg 1.10.1and kernel 2.6.38.
3D acceleration works great in both these distributions. I feel that this is not an upstream kernel bug but an issue with the Ubuntu packages. Moreover in Mandriva and Mageia "lsmod | grep radeon" produces the following: radeon 887457 3 ttm 64672 1 radeon drm_kms_helper 40531 1 radeon drm 179474 5 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper i2c_algo_bit 13089 1 radeon i2c_core 29667 5 i2c_i801,radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_algo_bit but in Ubuntu "radeon" is not shown. Attempts to "insmod radeon" result in a failed to load error message. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874132 Title: No 3D nor Unity using a Radeon Mobility card To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/874132/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
