To update this bug, I have now wiped my SSD and installed 11.10 via a
USB iso. In order to even boot the iso, I had to edit the grub menu so
that I could set acpi=off. Having installed 11.10 successfully, instead
of seeing a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand
side, I am now only seeing a purple screen with no cursor. I am unable
to force a reboot via the keyboard or access any of the terminal screens
from this point. In order to proceed I need to hard reboot and in the
grub menu set acpi=off.
