I just noticed that it works for me within a guest session, where the
"Startup Applications" tool is useless by design...

At http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1566078 you find some
guidance on how you can customize the guest session feature (which is
designed to start with default settings), and disabling the login sound
is one of the things shown.
