After some testing I found that the following example would still not
work:

cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
nano google-chrome.list

So maybe simpler fix could be:
syntax "apt/sources.list" "\.list(\.old|~)?$"

Added advantage it would also works for files in /var/lib/dpkg/info/
