I preferred to do second method you gave me: put the following single line in 
sources.list:
deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu breezy main restricted universe 
multiverse.

Good news: the upgrade completed successfully!

Tell me if you need the dist-upgrade*.log files.

To get back connected again to internet however, I need to debug my
cxacru.c (driver for Conexant chips ADSL modem) or other files and re-
compile (my usb ADSL modem is not recognized anymore since the kernel
has changed...). So I need to do a little more work here ... but anyway
now I am under Dapper, which is what I wanted.
