Dang! I fumbled the keyboard there and posted prematurely. I may be near the limit of my skills on this one, but I'll try to learn more. This hardware is (otherwise) serving well for me, so I'd be happy to keep using it, if I can. I'm not in a position to say, right now, whether there's a general, if minor, correctness issue for the kernel, here.
I'm also not sure whether I ought to rewrite the initial post to add what more I've learned. Any tips on launchpad procedures are welcome.
