On further investigation I think that the Unity-2D issue is not related to this problem and that this problem applies equally to 2 and 3D.
I also realise that I am not seeing confirmation dialogs when I request a logout. It simply logs out immediately. I have three machines running 11.10 and two of them exhibit the symptom and one does not.
