This is the normal behavior when the distro is no longer supported. with this in mind this is what I mean. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Karmic If you read you will see the following. Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is NOT an LTS (Long Term Support) release and is no longer supported with security updates (as of April 2011). It is recommended to upgrade to the current version of Ubuntu And in the the file. /usr/lib/update-manager/check-new-release-gtk It goes into nag mode, but it should display a unsupported dialog. The other buttons should work. eg: Buttons: Don't Upgrade and Upgrade Later click the little x on the top right to close..
