I noticed that if I remove the power and data cables from the CD writer,
and put them back in, the problem doesn't happen in the next hours or
days. I got exactly the same symptoms with the 2.6.18 kernel from Debian
Etch, even when running from the netinst CD (just busybox). I
permanently removed the CD writer a few weeks ago, and the problem
didn't appear since then.  Probably damaged hardware, not kernel bug.
