Even if the enveloppe is not suppposed to change and the triangle gets blue, it's too hard to notice. I had to read on another bug report about this blue triangle to notice it ! I liked it better to have the unread messages count appearing on the Empathy icon. I don't know if it's possible to have this back. It was more informative and easy to notice.
