Public bug reported:

After upgrade to 11.10, volume/sound output seemed normal, but after
adjusting the volume, the sound *almost* completely went away (I could
still barely hear it), and further (positive) volume adjustments did
nothing, nor did muting/unmuting.

After playing around with sound settings, I discovered that:
    1) Adjusting balance would bring sound back immediately.
    2) Adjusting sound lower would also result in the sound coming back at a
certain point, but that point would change if I adjusted the sound up (losing
the sound again), and then down again.
