I am having this problem too with my Sony Mavica MVC-CD300.

gphoto2 is able to see the camera and pull data from it:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
gphoto2 --list-folders
There is 1 folder in folder '/'.
 - store_00010001
There are 0 folders in folder '/store_00010001'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am also able to mount the device with Dolphin and pull the images from
the device.

gPhoto2 says it fully supports the device:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
gphoto2 --list-cameras |grep CD300
        "Sony MVC-CD300 (PTP mode)"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am using PTP Mode as well.
