Public bug reported: I didn't actually notice the failed install. But connectivity went away. I had to remove and re-install Samba from scratch to get it working again. Note also that security=user seems to cause the Samba server to be invisible to Windows 7 machines--by changing that one line in smb.conf (from user to share and back again) I could toggle the appearance of the server in my WIndows 7 network window (Win 7 Pro, 64-bit).
