Hi again, If I start a 'tail -f /var/log/syslog', then suspend using the '/etc/acpi/sleep.sh force', I can see a fair bit of additional information in the terminal when it "resumes" (even though it no longer has a hard drive...). For whatever reason, when I suspend using the System > Quit > Suspend, my display does not resume as completely (though I suspect the underlying problem is the same).
