Oddly, it fixed itself in the past few days -- not sure what was going on. During that time, I reinstalled my OS (upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10beta2), though I kept my Firefox profile intact -- the upgrade may have reset some internal piece of Gnome state that was causing trouble. So, this is WORKSFORME in my normal Firefox profile now.
