I can second this exact behavior. I've got an X60, running the latest BIOS as of this writing, and the modem is enabled. Sometimes sound works, sometimes it doesn't. Reloading the sound modules does not get it working, and sometimes a reboot won't make it work either. However, it usually works after a power cycle.
Running 7.04 (Feisty) with all the latest updates as of this writing.
