I have double-checked this, and I think it's a kernel problem, not a console-setup one, at least on my system. Maybe it's a vesafb-related issue.
I've recompiled the kernel from the original 2.6.20 source from kernel.org, and the problem suddenly disappeared. I'm reporting this on the opportune package, please everybody who's reading this, write some lines about your hardware.
