I ran another apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade and lo and behold,
the Skype issues were fixed. So please take my comment above (#33) with
a grain of salt. :)

The fact alone that Skype's back is a reason for me to be very happy. I
used a paid-for Skype account as my home phone and if that's not
available, I have to boot into other operating systems, while all my
other work is done in Ubuntu.
