It's currently recommended practice to compress logs, though; every
logrotate.d/ file that I have uses it.

If the logs are large, the compression saving is quite significant (it's
text, after all), and if the logs are very small, the I/O and CPU effort
hardly matter?

So I'm closing this as "wont fix" right now. However, if you object,
I'm fine with reopening it.
